LUNAIRE UNIVERSITY

Located in the Northern woods of Minnesota, a small college is actually one of the largest supernatural hubs in the United States. Though they still must keep their monster secret from the humans on campus and in town, they get to live relatively freely amongst their own kind. Witches, werewolves, the occasional vampire, and other supernatural types are all called to Lunaire. However, someone may have other intentions. Once the Dean is discovered in her office with the words DEATH TO WITCHES written in her blood next to the body, the supernatural community of Lunaire realizes they're in more danger than they thought.

LUNAIRE UNIVERSITY

Lunaire University, located in Lunaire, Minnesota, is different from other colleges. While most of it is like any other school, there is one key difference: the majority of the student body consists of supernatural creatures. The founder and its family were werewolves, the Dean and most of the faculty are witches (along with the Omega Beta Zeta sorority), campus security and the town cops are hunters, and the students can be anything from a human to a banshee. While there are some humans that attend, they're (mostly) kept in the dark about what truly lurks in the dark on campus. Not to mention the shadowy, secret society called the Order of Birthgrave. In its CANON VERSE, the Dean was recently murdered in her office, found next to the words 'DEATH TO WITCHES' in blood next to her body. In its SECONDARY, NORMAL VERSE, Lunaire University is a regular college with no supernatural elements, and often used as a placeholder when a college is to be mentioned in other non-verse threads.

LUNAIRE UNIVERSITY

The college town setting for the verse BESTIAL, situated deep in the woods of Northern Minnesota, a few short miles away from the Canadian border. Surrounded by lakes and bisected by the Rainy River, the town is mostly based around Lunaire University, both named after the influential Lunaire family that founded the town and the college. In its CANON VERSE, Lunaire is a major hub for the supernatural community, due to the founding family being a legacy of werewolves. Though most of the community consists of werewolves, witches, vampires, banshees, hunters, and ghosts, a small part is still human—some aware and some unaware of the monsters that live among them. In its SECONDARY, NORMAL VERSE, much is the same except the supernatural does not exist.

banshees are supernatural creatures that are nearly indistinguishable from humans dna-wise, but have the ability to produce a scream so loud it can rupture eardrums from miles away. banshees are also one of the rarest creatures in the supernatural realm, as the gene that makes banshees often skips generations, and seemingly comes from having a distant witch relative in one's ancestry. the banshee's scream is generally a harbinger of death, though can be used as a defensive measure against other supernatural creatures or nefarious humans. though they have that sonic scream and are more in tune with the realm beyond, banshees are otherwise normal people that lead normal lives. they just occasionally find dead bodies lying around. the banshee gene happens to appear in women more often than men, but male banshees are not unheard of. banshees are born with their powers, not made, and the powers mature over time. to learn more about banshees in the bestial universe, click here

ghosts are supernatural creatures that formerly walked the earth as humans. not everyone who dies becomes a ghost, but certain souls are unable to cross to the realm beyond; be it unfinished business, an untimely death, or being unable to accept that they have died. generally, ghosts are humans that have died unhappy or unfulfilled, more than likely murdered. unable to physically interact with humans, they are generally only able to be seen by other supernatural creatures, or a few select humans (usually due to a distant supernatural relative, or they are for some reason in touch with the realm beyond). ghosts start out haunting where they died, but as time goes on, they are able to go further past the boundaries of their death spot. the longer a ghost remains in our realm, the harder it becomes for them to pass on, and their sanity may start to slip. some ghosts develop an ability to possess a living human, but will be banished from the mortal realm if caught by a hunter. to learn more about ghosts, click here

vampires are reanimated corpses that subsist on human blood. formerly human, all vampires were at one point a human in the mortal realm, only to be killed and changed by another vampire. human blood keeps them alive after their death and subsequent reanimation; vampires have to drink at least twice a day in order to keep enough blood in their system to stay alive. when they feed, their eyes go completely black and their canine teeth grow into long, piercing fangs. vampires are generally considered to be the 'trash' of the supernatural realm, as their primary drive is to feed on humans (or non-toxic supernaturals, such as witches or banshees), which makes them quite animalistic. they do not have a hierarchy or government in place and generally are not pack creatures, though some vampires form 'parties' in order to hunt and feed. vampires tend to be nomadic and roam at night, as the sun is their biggest weakness. to learn more about vampires, click here

werewolves are humanoid lycanthropes. though they look human, their dna shares more in common with a wolf than a person. the gene that makes them into werewolves is considered a blessing, not a curse. not all werewolves are born though, as a human can be infected through a scratch (not a bite!) if its deep enough. werewolves are considered at the top of the supernatural food chain, due to their large population and their physical prowess when transformed. wolves can turn at-will, but go through a forced transition when the moon is full; transitions are painful, but get easier to get through the older a wolf gets. packs, much like in wolves, are a family-like hierarchy. instead of a single alpha, packs have 'parents' in charge, though they may not be literal parents to anyone in the pack; werewolves without a pack are referred to as 'orphaned wolves', even if they have living parents of their own. wolves that are born are natural wolves, while wolves that were scratched are turned wolves. to learn more, click here

witches are humans that practice magic. typically they do not possess supernatural dna, so anyone can engage in witchcraft, but there are long lineages in the witching realm that have been practicing for centuries. witches that come from one of these families is considered a 'born' witch, while those that are the first witches in their immediate families are considered 'learned' witches, and thus less respected than born witches. the source of a witch's magic can come from many places, though many gain theirs through nature. some may gain it through darker means such as blood magic, or communing with the realm beyond. the omega beta zeta sorority is a coven on the lunaire campus full of learned witches that gain magic through worship of the biblical lilith, while the lunaire faculty coven gains magic through ancient rituals. due to their powers and general reverence in the supernatural community, witches are just below werewolves in the food chain. the witch community and covens in general tend to be a matriarchy, though anyone can be a witch, including men and nonbinary individuals. to learn more, click here

LUNAIRE UNIVERSITY

beta delta chi

the largest and the rowdiest fraternity on the lunaire campus, the brotherhood is one of the few organizations on college property that consists majorly of humans. most of the humans are unaware, too, of the supernatural creatures that inhabit lunaire. a large percentage of the brothers are athletes, either for the football or hockey team, though it is not a requirement to rush. throwing large parties on campus nearly nightly, they are constantly in trouble with campus security or the dean's office (until she died, of course). notable brothers: dovid rabinowitz, noël lunaire.

the canal street wolves

a smaller pack in town, the canal street wolves are mostly at odds with the larger lunaire pack. many of the wolves leaving the lunaires to come to canal street for a variety of reasons: such as hating or breaking the lunaires' rules, wanting a pack with less people, or not getting along with a lunaire descendant. skews more young and has a larger percentage of turned wolves, the hunting association hassles the canal street wolves more than any other group on campus or in town. a rare pack that doesn't run on a family model, they are led by one alpha: tbd.

the faculty

not all of the lunaire university faculty are witches, but most of them are. including the late dean, the head of the coven; a role which is passed down through all deans since the founding of the school. a coven with a lot of history, there are a traditional group that acquires magic through the oldest method: nature, particularly the moon. though a majority of the coven are faculty members, there are a handful of students that participate, usually those who are born witches and legacy students of lunaire, preparing to one day be faculty themselves.

the founding family

the lunaires have a long standing history in lunaire, mn and the university of the same name, seeing as their family founded them both. their secret? they're one of the original werewolf bloodlines in america. hervé lunaire founded the town and the university shortly thereafter in the late 1800s as a safe haven for his descendants, both werewolves and black, so they would have a safe place to live and grow. though it was intended just for family, soon it became a safe haven for all supernatural creatures where they could (relatively) live freely away from humans. now, all lunaire descendants attend the school or live within the town, just like hervé wanted, and consequentially lunaire has become an epicenter for the supernatural realm.

the hunting association

hunters are humans that are aware of supernatural creatures and have taken it upon themselves to be a quasi-volunteer police force in lunaire. barely tolerated by the supernatural community, their authority is only occasionally respected. strength in numbers, hunters are never to patrol alone and tend to stick together in their daily life. most hunters have a code they adhere to, only arresting or extinguishing supernatural creatures that have harmed or killed humans, though some will go rogue and kill anyone they can get their hands on... if they don't get killed first.

the lunaire pack

the lunaires, a prolific lycanthrope dynasty, have been a pack longer than the university has existed. though it is a pack started by the lunaire family, any wolf is allowed to join them; a large percentage of natural wolves within the pack, they welcome orphaned or turned wolves with open arms. a traditionally run group, they are staunch with their rules which they've held for over hundreds of years. like most packs, their hierarchy is based on the family model, with there being two alphas instead of one leading the wolves. for decades, the lunaires have run a 'hiking club' with the university as an excuse to head into the forest when the full moon blooms. most humans are unware of what the hiking club is truly up to and are quite confused on why they aren't allowed to join.

lunaire university wolves

the lunaire university wolves encompass all ncaa sports teams within the university, including their division ii football team and their revered men's ice hockey team; the latter more successful than the former. their colors are dark green and white, with a mascot named luna the wolf. though they are a smaller school, the university goes all out for their sports teams, even the ones that suck. the name is actually a bit of a inside joke for the supernatural community, as the university was named for the founding family of the town, the lunaires, a large werewolf dynasty.

omega beta zeta

one of the three sororities on the lunaire campus, the omega beta zetas a bit special: they double as one of lunaire's many covens. most of the sorority consists of 'learned' witches, all young women that have sworn their allegiance to lilith as part of their initiation into the sorority. while the majority of the sisters are witches, there are a select few that are unaware of what their sisters do behind closed doors. relatively new to magic, the coven have a lot to learn and a lot to prove, often feeling insecure when faced with born witches or the faculty coven. notable sisters: lisa liddell, desiree njie.

the order of birthgrave

the mysterious secret society on the lunaire university campus that everyone wants to join. incredibly secretive, obviously, the society is a front for a coven that worships death and utilizes demonic magic. despite using magic themselves, they hate all supernatural creatures and wish to eradicate the world of werewolves especially. recently murdering the dean and writing death to witches in her blood next to the body, their ultimate goal is to start a civil war within the supernatural communities that will leave the order of birthgrave the only ones left standing in the end.

Banshees are some of the least known about supernatural creatures in the realm. Due to the small number of them in the community, they are considered a bit of a commodity, which has had disastrous consequences for some banshees. Because of this, and their nigh-indistinguishable differences from humans, most banshees keep their status as a supernatural creature to themselves. Some banshees are even unaware of their own status as a supernatural creature, as the banshee's powers typically develop later in life and seemingly occur at random. Most banshees tend to be women, though not exclusively. There is no known reason for this, beyond the general myth of the 'wailing woman' prevalent in folkore. While male or nonbinary banshees are not unheard of, there are even rarer still than women with the banshee gene. The banshee gene seems to mutate or occur at random, though research has narrowed down one main possibility. All banshees likely had a practicing witch somewhere in their family line at some time, but the magic did not continue to be practiced within the family. Therefore, with bits of magic still in the veins of the family line, it manifests in a gene that enhances the scream and thins the veil between the mortal realm, the supernatural realm, and the realm beyond. The gene skips generations and family members as well, seemingly inherited by chance. i.e. if a family has four children, all from the same set of parents, in which one of them has a great-great-great grandmother that had been a witch or banshee, one or two of the children have a chance of becoming a banshee themselves.Banshees can only be born, not turned or made. Their powers typically manifest long after entering adulthood. Many banshees consider the gene to be a curse and feel rather ostracized by the supernatural community, if not their family as well. Their powerful scream mainly functions as a warning bell for death, either death that has already occurred or is about to happen in the vicinity. Often banshees are drawn to the site of the death, sometimes finding dead bodies there or find people about to die, which can be beneficial to police and/or the hunting association if the banshee choses to cooperate with them. Along with sensing death, their scream can be used defensively if need be. It is effective on all creatures, supernatural or human, except for ghosts (as they are not on the human realm).
